Dominance in BDSM is often reduced to a familiar image: the person giving orders, holding the restraints, delivering the impact, or deciding what happens next. That image captures part of what Dominance can look like, but it does not tell us much about what makes consensual authority meaningful.
Being Dominant is not the same thing as being domineering. A Dominant may be commanding, nurturing, sadistic, playful, structured, service-oriented, protective, emotionally intense, or remarkably gentle. Some people exercise authority only during individual scenes, while others incorporate Dominance into ongoing D/s relationships. The authority involved can be narrow or extensive depending on what the people involved have actually negotiated.
That is part of what makes quotes about dominance so interesting. Fiction and literature often capture the emotional appeal of possession, surrender, control, responsibility, and authority in ways educational language cannot. They can put words to fantasies that feel difficult to describe while also revealing some of the assumptions we carry about what power is supposed to look like.
At the same time, quotes about dominance should not automatically be treated as BDSM advice. Fiction can romanticize absolute ownership, resistance, coercion, and control because fantasy does not have to function like an ethical real-world relationship. Consensual BDSM still depends on communication, boundaries, and agreements between the people involved.
If you are still learning the distinctions between Dominants, submissives, Tops, and Bottoms, my guide to what BDSM stands for provides a useful foundation before diving more deeply into power exchange.

An Editorial Note About These Quotes About Dominance
Many memorable quotes about dominance come from erotic fiction, romance, fantasy, or literature rather than BDSM educators. That distinction matters because fiction often deliberately intensifies themes of ownership, surrender, possession, fear, resistance, and control.
Some of the quotes in this collection use language I would not recommend treating as a model for real-world BDSM relationships. A fictional character can declare that another person belongs to them absolutely because the reader understands they are entering an imagined world. Real authority exchange requires actual people to establish what authority has been given, what remains outside the dynamic, and what happens when someone changes their mind.
Research examining BDSM consent has identified mutual informed consent and negotiation as central features distinguishing consensual BDSM from abuse. The National Coalition for Sexual Freedom similarly emphasizes informed and voluntary consent within BDSM relationships and scenes.
I enjoy quotes about dominance partly because they allow us to explore the fantasy of power while still being clear about the ethics required when we translate fantasy into practice.
Quotes About Dominance, Authority, and Earned Submission
Some of the strongest quotes about dominance challenge the idea that authority is simply something a Dominant takes. They frame Dominance as relational, which means its meaning depends partly on what another person has willingly chosen to give.
“The craft of a master is not imposing dominance, but winning submission.”
Ann Somerville, Remastering Jerna
This is one of my favorite quotes about dominance because it makes a distinction that gets lost surprisingly often. Consensual authority is not created by declaring yourself powerful enough to deserve obedience.
A Dominant can identify as Dominant before entering a relationship, just as someone can identify as submissive while single. The actual authority inside a D/s relationship, however, comes from what people negotiate together.
That makes Dominance fundamentally different from domineering behavior. A domineering person attempts to control others whether or not they want that control. A Dominant within consensual BDSM exercises authority that another person has chosen to participate in.
The word “winning” also deserves some nuance. Submission should not have to be earned through manipulation, persistence, or convincing someone to surrender boundaries. I read the quote instead as a reminder that trust, competence, consistency, and mutual desire create the circumstances in which someone may genuinely want to submit.
If you are exploring your own relationship with authority, my 100 journal prompts for Dominants include questions about leadership, responsibility, consent, trust, scene skills, and the kind of Dominant you actually want to be.
Quotes About Dominance as Identity Versus Action
Not everyone who Tops is a Dominant, and not everything a Dominant does looks stereotypically dominant. Alexis Hall captures that distinction beautifully.
“But I suppose it comes down to whether you think dominance and submission are about acts or about people.”
Alexis Hall, For Real
This is one of the quotes about dominance that gets at the difference between behavior and relational meaning.
A person can tie someone up without being their Dominant. They can flog someone, give instructions during a scene, or control a sexual activity while functioning as a Top rather than participating in a D/s authority dynamic.
Likewise, a Dominant does not need to spend every interaction giving commands. Someone can exercise negotiated authority while being affectionate, humorous, gentle, uncertain, nurturing, or emotionally vulnerable.
The meaning of an action depends on the relationship surrounding it. Kneeling may be an intensely submissive ritual within one dynamic and simply a practical body position in another. Making someone coffee may be ordinary kindness in one relationship and a meaningful act of service in another.
These distinctions are why quotes about dominance can sometimes explain D/s more effectively than a list of BDSM activities. The activity alone does not tell us what power means to the people participating.
Quotes About Dominance, Possession, and the Fantasy of Ownership
Ownership language appears frequently in quotes about dominance because possession can carry enormous erotic weight within D/s fantasies.
“You want to be free. [However], you also want to be mine. [Above all], you can’t be both.”
Nenia Campbell, Crowned by Fire
As a piece of fantasy, the tension in this quote is obvious. Freedom and possession are being positioned as incompatible, creating the sense that surrender requires choosing one over the other.
As real-world BDSM philosophy, however, I would push back on that premise.
A consensual submissive does not stop being autonomous because they enter a power exchange relationship. Even people who use ownership language or participate in extensive authority exchange remain human beings capable of withdrawing consent, reconsidering agreements, and leaving relationships.
That does not mean ownership language is inherently unhealthy. People can consensually build deeply meaningful relationships around being owned, belonging, serving, or surrendering extensive authority. The emotional experience of belonging to someone can be enormously powerful precisely because it has been chosen.
When reading quotes about dominance like this one, I separate the erotic fantasy of absolute possession from the practical reality of consensual authority. Fantasy can say, “You cannot be free and mine.” Ethical BDSM has to leave room for the fact that choosing to belong is only meaningful when there is still a person capable of choosing.
Quotes About Dominance and Erotic Surrender
Another common theme in quotes about dominance is the moment when resistance gives way to surrender.
“I want to touch the parts of you no one else has touched. I want to own the piece of you that has yet to be discovered. So stop resisting. Let go. Let it happen.”
Riley Murphy, Requested Surrender
There is an obvious erotic intensity in this quote. It imagines Dominance as gaining access to something hidden and submission as allowing another person to reach a place nobody else has reached.
The language of “stop resisting” and “let it happen” works differently in fiction than it should in real-world sexual negotiation. Resistance can be an intentionally negotiated part of BDSM, particularly within consensual struggle, resistance play, or consensual non-consent fantasies. Outside that negotiated context, another person’s resistance is not an obstacle a Dominant should simply overcome.
That distinction becomes important when people use quotes about dominance to shape their expectations of real partners. Erotic fiction frequently makes certainty attractive. The Dominant somehow knows what the submissive secretly wants, even when the submissive resists.
Real people cannot reliably read one another’s hidden desires. We have to communicate.
Tools such as a yes no maybe list can help turn fantasy into a more specific conversation about what someone actually wants, what they might consider, and what remains outside their boundaries.
Quotes About Dominance and the Danger of Control
Not every quote in a collection of quotes about dominance needs to celebrate power. Some of the most useful ones remind us what happens when control becomes an end in itself.
“The apotheosis of the controlling mind is monstrous and terrifying.”
Stewart Stafford
I like including this alongside more romantic quotes about dominance because consensual Dominance needs to remain distinguishable from a generalized desire to control other people.
Wanting negotiated authority over a submissive partner does not entitle someone to control everyone around them. A Dominant’s authority also does not automatically extend into every area of a submissive’s life simply because the relationship includes power exchange.
A scene Dominant may have substantial authority for two hours and none afterward. Another D/s relationship may include daily protocols, financial agreements, clothing choices, rituals, or other areas of negotiated control. Even extensive authority should have a scope that the people involved understand.
Problems arise when “I am Dominant” becomes an explanation for behavior that nobody actually agreed to.
This is why quotes about dominance need to exist alongside conversations about consent and accountability. Authority can be deeply erotic while still requiring limits.
Quotes About Dominance, Gentleness, and Restraint
Some of the most compelling quotes about dominance are not BDSM quotes at all. They simply say something interesting about how power can function.
“His gentleness was uncompromising; because he would not compete for dominance, he was indomitable.”
Ursula K. Le Guin, The Dispossessed
Le Guin was not describing a BDSM scene here, but I think this quote belongs in a conversation about Dominance because it challenges the assumption that power must always look aggressive.
Gentleness does not inherently undermine authority.
A Dominant can speak softly and still be unmistakably in control. They can provide reassurance without abandoning the dynamic. They can adjust a scene because something is not working without appearing indecisive. They can accept feedback without turning the conversation into a challenge to their status.
Some Dominants find that quiet certainty suits them much better than theatrical harshness. Others genuinely enjoy commanding voices, strict protocols, punishment, or intimidation. Both can be authentic.
Quotes about dominance like this are useful because they make room for a much wider spectrum of Dominant styles. Authority does not have to be loud before it becomes meaningful.
Quotes About Dominance and Emotional Connection
Dominance can be erotic without emotional intimacy, particularly within casual or recreational BDSM. For many people, though, power exchange becomes intertwined with care, affection, vulnerability, and attachment.
“He needed the hand on his shoulder, the kiss to his temple, and the hot, ragged breath of his Master over his face.”
Casey K. Cox
This is one of the softer quotes about dominance in the collection. The Dominant presence is communicated through closeness rather than command.
There is something important in that image because BDSM is often represented as though tenderness and authority are opposites. In reality, affection can reinforce a power dynamic rather than weaken it.
A hand on someone’s shoulder can be comfort, ownership, reassurance, direction, or all of those things simultaneously depending on the context. A kiss can coexist with strict authority. A Dominant can care deeply for someone’s emotional needs without becoming less Dominant.
This becomes especially visible in aftercare. The role someone occupied during a scene does not determine who is allowed to need tenderness afterward. Dominants and Tops can have their own emotional and physical recovery needs as well.
My guide to what is aftercare explores that transition in more detail, including aftercare for Dominants and Tops.
Quotes About Dominance That Challenge Dominance Itself
One reason I enjoy collecting quotes about dominance is that the strongest ones do not always flatter the Dominant role. They make us think about what power means and what happens when someone begins confusing authority with entitlement.
Dominance can be exciting because control has emotional weight. Someone is choosing to follow your direction, trust your judgment, receive the sensation you administer, perform the task you assign, or surrender something they ordinarily control themselves.
That makes authority meaningful, but it also gives the Dominant something to be responsible for.
The more authority a person accepts, the more important it becomes to think about where that authority came from, what it actually covers, and whether the person granting it still wants the arrangement.
Quotes about dominance that romanticize absolute control can be wonderful fantasy fuel while still requiring a very different framework once actual people are involved.
Dominance Is Not the Same Thing as Domineering Behavior
A recurring theme throughout these quotes about dominance is the difference between consensual authority and controlling behavior.
Someone does not become a Dominant by being demanding in everyday life. Being bossy, jealous, possessive, intimidating, or controlling without agreement is not evidence of natural Dominance.
Likewise, someone who identifies as a Dominant does not receive automatic authority over a person simply because that person identifies as submissive. Roles may indicate compatibility, but they do not establish the terms of a relationship.
A Dominant and submissive still need to determine what their dynamic actually includes.
This is one reason the BDSM myth that “real submissives obey” can be so damaging. My article on common BDSM myths explores that misconception alongside myths about abuse, pain, trauma, safewords, and what Dominants and submissives are supposedly required to be.
Dominance Comes With Responsibility, but Not Omnipotence
One interpretation of quotes about dominance that I deliberately avoid is the idea that a responsible Dominant should always know exactly what to do.
Dominants are human. They can misread situations, forget things, underestimate an activity, feel nervous, encounter unfamiliar reactions, or realize they do not have enough knowledge to perform something safely.
Responsible authority includes recognizing those limits.
Sometimes the most responsible Dominant response is, “I don’t know enough about this yet.” That may mean taking a class, researching an unfamiliar practice, asking someone with greater expertise, or choosing a different activity.
Authority should not require performing certainty when certainty does not exist.
This matters especially with technically complex BDSM activities. Someone’s willingness to submit to an activity does not automatically make the Dominant qualified to perform it.
Quotes About Dominance and Consent
Consent can sound strangely clinical beside romantic quotes about dominance, but the two subjects belong together. Research on consent in BDSM identifies mutual informed consent as a central feature distinguishing consensual BDSM from abuse and emphasizes the importance of negotiation, safety practices, and ongoing communication. That framework matters particularly in D/s relationships because authority only has meaning within the scope of what the people involved have actually agreed to.
Power exchange depends on the fact that authority has actually been exchanged. That means understanding what someone wants, what they do not want, and what conditions shape their willingness to participate.
Consent also continues after a scene begins. A submissive can change their mind, use a safeword or another stop signal, communicate that something needs to change, or decide they no longer want an activity they previously requested.
That does not destroy the power dynamic. It defines the conditions that make the power dynamic possible.
This is where fictional quotes about dominance and real-world BDSM sometimes diverge most dramatically. Fiction may eroticize a Dominant who always knows what the submissive secretly wants. In an actual relationship, communicating is more reliable than assuming.
Quotes About Dominance and Trust
Trust appears repeatedly beneath the surface of these quotes about dominance, even when the word itself is absent.
The ability to surrender control can depend on believing that another person will respect the conditions under which that control was given. Likewise, a Dominant may need to trust that a partner will communicate important information rather than hiding discomfort because they want to appear sufficiently submissive.
Trust is not the same thing as never questioning someone.
In fact, a dynamic where someone is afraid to question the Dominant may be less secure than one where disagreement can happen without threatening the relationship.
A trustworthy Dominant does not need unquestioned obedience to prove that their authority is real. They need enough confidence in the relationship to allow honest information into it.
This is another reason I find reflective practices useful for people exploring Dominance. My journal prompts for Dominants include questions specifically about earning trust, receiving feedback, admitting mistakes, and understanding the responsibilities attached to authority.
What Quotes About Dominance Can Teach Us
Quotes about dominance cannot teach rope safety, explain anatomy, negotiate a scene, or tell you whether a particular relationship is healthy. They can, however, give us language for experiences that are sometimes surprisingly difficult to articulate.
A fictional quote about ownership may help someone recognize that belonging is central to their erotic imagination. A line about gentleness may help a new Dominant realize they do not need to imitate the harsh style they have seen online. A quote about submission being won rather than imposed may prompt someone to reconsider what authority actually means to them.
The value is in the reflection that follows.
Instead of asking whether a quote describes the correct way to practice BDSM, ask why it resonates. What fantasy is underneath it? What emotion does it capture? Which part would you want in a real relationship, and which part belongs safely in fiction?
Those questions turn quotes about dominance into something more interesting than aesthetic captions. They become tools for understanding your relationship with power.
Frequently Asked Questions About Quotes About Dominance
What Are Good Quotes About Dominance in BDSM?
The most interesting quotes about dominance tend to explore authority, control, surrender, trust, responsibility, possession, or the emotional relationship between Dominance and submission.
They do not necessarily need to come from BDSM literature. A quote about leadership, power, gentleness, or control can also offer an interesting way to think about Dominance when the original context is clearly acknowledged.
Can I Use Fictional Quotes About Dominance as BDSM Advice?
I would not recommend it.
Erotic fiction is designed to create an emotional experience, not necessarily to model ethical negotiation. Fiction may intentionally romanticize coercion, absolute possession, resistance, or unlimited authority because those themes are compelling within fantasy.
Use quotes about dominance as inspiration or reflection rather than replacing education about consent, communication, technique, or risk.
Does Being Dominant Mean Being Controlling?
Not in the everyday sense.
A Dominant exercises authority that has been negotiated within a BDSM relationship or scene. A controlling person attempts to dictate another person’s behavior without that negotiated authority.
The behaviors can sometimes look superficially similar, which is why context and consent matter.
Can a Dominant Be Gentle?
Absolutely. Dominance describes a relationship to authority, not a required personality.
Some Dominants are nurturing, affectionate, soft-spoken, humorous, or gentle while maintaining clearly defined authority. Others enjoy a harsher or more formal style. Neither approach is inherently more authentic.
Do All Dominants Want a Submissive?
Not necessarily. Some people primarily identify as Tops and enjoy directing BDSM activities without wanting a D/s relationship. Others identify strongly as Dominant but may be single, play casually, or have relationships where their Dominance is not active.
Labels describe something about a person’s preferences, but they do not dictate one required relationship structure.
Are Quotes About Ownership Unhealthy?
Not automatically.
Ownership can be a powerful consensual metaphor or relationship framework within BDSM. Some people find the idea of belonging deeply erotic or emotionally meaningful.
Problems arise when fantasy language is treated as permission to ignore autonomy, boundaries, or consent. A consensual ownership dynamic still exists between people who retain their basic ability to make choices about participating in the relationship.
Can Dominants Have Limits?
Yes. Dominants can have hard limits, soft limits, emotional boundaries, relationship boundaries, and activities they simply do not enjoy.
Submission is not a request list the Dominant is obligated to fulfill. A submissive can desire an activity that their Dominant does not want to perform, and the Dominant’s no deserves the same respect.
Can a Dominant Withdraw Consent?
Yes. Consent applies to everyone involved in BDSM.
A Dominant can stop a scene, decline an activity, change an agreement, or decide they are not comfortable accepting a particular form of authority or responsibility.
Final Thoughts on Quotes About Dominance
The quotes about dominance that stay with me tend to be the ones that complicate power rather than simply glorify it. They remind us that Dominance can involve possession without erasing autonomy, authority without arrogance, gentleness without weakness, and responsibility without pretending that a Dominant has all the answers.
Fiction gives us permission to imagine absolute surrender and impossible certainty. Real BDSM asks us to translate those fantasies into relationships between actual people who communicate, negotiate, change, make mistakes, and retain boundaries.
That tension is part of what makes quotes about dominance worth collecting. They can reveal what we find erotic about authority while giving us an opportunity to examine whether the fantasy we enjoy is something we want literally, symbolically, or only in imagination.
If you have favorite quotes about dominance that you think belong in this collection, you can contact me and send them my way. I am always interested in quotes that capture the complexity of Dominance, surrender, responsibility, trust, and power exchange rather than reducing BDSM to someone simply being in charge.
