Submission is often misunderstood by people outside BDSM. Popular culture frequently portrays submissives as passive, timid, powerless, or willing to do whatever a Dominant tells them. Anyone who has spent meaningful time around BDSM knows the reality is considerably more complicated.
Submission can involve trust, vulnerability, service, surrender, eroticism, discipline, pain, devotion, emotional intimacy, or intentionally giving another person a specific degree of authority. It can be playful and temporary or deeply woven into someone’s identity and relationships. These quotes about submission capture some of that complexity, particularly the tension between vulnerability and strength that makes submission meaningful for so many people.
There is also no single submissive personality. Submissives can be outspoken, ambitious, independent, stubborn, nurturing, confrontational, introverted, extroverted, or anything in between. A person can hold tremendous authority in most areas of life and still find fulfillment in surrendering some of it within a negotiated BDSM dynamic.
The quotes about submission below come primarily from fiction and erotic literature, so they should not be treated as instructions for how healthy D/s relationships are supposed to work. Instead, I think they are most interesting as reflections on trust, surrender, fear, devotion, pain, and the psychological experience of submission.
Editorial note: BDSM fiction often explores fantasies of absolute surrender, coercion, pain, and power that do not translate directly to ethical BDSM practice. Some quotes in this collection contain language or themes I would not recommend using as a model for real-world relationships. I have included them because they offer insight into how submission has been portrayed in fiction, with additional context where consent, autonomy, or other concerns deserve discussion.

Quotes About Submission, Trust, and Vulnerability
Trust is one of the themes that appears repeatedly in discussions about submission. Giving someone access to your vulnerability requires more than attraction or chemistry. It requires confidence that the authority, information, or physical access you offer will be treated with care.
One of my favorite quotes about submission captures that relationship between fear and trust beautifully:
“Right on the edge of fear was where trust could grow.”
Cherise Sinclair, Breaking Free
There can be something incredibly intimate about allowing another person to bring you close to an edge while knowing they are still paying attention to you. That does not mean fear itself is automatically desirable or that trust requires being frightened. Within consensual BDSM, the important part is that vulnerability exists within boundaries that have been negotiated by the people participating.
Submission also does not erase agency. Choosing to surrender a particular kind of control can itself be a profoundly intentional act.
“If my Master is lost, I’ll find him. I’ll lead him back to himself, because to serve doesn’t always mean to follow.”
Joey W. Hill, Hostile Takeover
Of all the quotes about submission on this list, this one particularly challenges the idea that service means unquestioning obedience. Submission does not require someone to stop thinking critically, lose their judgment, or become incapable of supporting a Dominant in ways the Dominant may not have expected.
Healthy authority dynamics can involve responsibility in both directions.
Quotes About Submission and Fear
Fear can occupy a complicated place within BDSM. Some people intentionally incorporate consensual fear into scenes because anticipation, uncertainty, or carefully controlled vulnerability intensifies arousal.
“Fear can be a potent aphrodisiac.”
Kele Moon, Beyond Eden
That does not mean fear automatically equals eroticism. Context and consent completely change the meaning of an experience.
A person who enjoys consensual fear play has agreed to explore that sensation within negotiated parameters. Fear that comes from genuinely not knowing whether your boundaries will be respected is an entirely different experience.
Another of these quotes about submission explores several intense emotions at once:
“Fear, anxiety, arousal, and pain; all are emotions and sensations. They are neither right, nor are they wrong; good nor bad. They are simply passions, a most important part of life. Feel them, fully experience them, surrender to them, and learn to accept them. As a submissive, you must let go.”
Nikki Sex, Fate
I would add some nuance to the final idea. Submission does not require someone to “let go” indiscriminately. A submissive can surrender within very clearly negotiated limits while retaining autonomy over everything outside them.
That distinction matters because surrender should be something a submissive chooses, not something another person is automatically entitled to receive.
Quotes About Submission and Psychological Power
Some of the most interesting BDSM experiences involve very little physical intensity at all. Psychological control, anticipation, commands, authority, language, ritual, or simply knowing another person has permission to make certain decisions can be incredibly powerful.
“What turns me on is not what I do to your body, it is what I do to your mind.”
Dirty Archangel, Lust Is My Favorite Sin: Dirty Archangel
This is one of the quotes about submission that gets closest to why D/s can be difficult to explain solely through lists of BDSM activities. You can watch someone get tied up and understand what physically happened. The psychological meaning of surrender is much harder to observe from the outside.
The same activity can feel completely different depending on the dynamic surrounding it. Being told to kneel by someone who holds negotiated authority may carry an entirely different emotional charge than kneeling as part of a scene with someone who does not.
Another quote touches on the vulnerability involved in being psychologically seen:
“BDSM is about dropping the pretenses; I want you completely exposed.”
Sierra Cartwright, With This Collar
Exposure does not necessarily mean physical nudity. For many people, being honest about desire can feel more vulnerable than removing clothing ever could.
Sharing fantasies, admitting what turns you on, asking to surrender, or allowing someone to see parts of yourself you ordinarily keep controlled can create its own form of nakedness.
Quotes About Submission, Pain, and Surrender
Submission and masochism are frequently associated with one another, but they are not the same thing. A submissive does not have to enjoy pain, and someone who loves pain does not necessarily enjoy submission.
For those who do experience an overlap between the two, pain can become part of the psychological experience of surrender.
“When the power of the shift rips the human body apart and transforms it into its new shape, there lives a second, less than a second, a mere shimmer of time when the mind is without a home, no body to call its own. Existence is painless in there, nothing but formlessness beyond understanding. A secret place, it contains nothing but the essence of self, a lost self. In the fire of pain, Colton found a whisper of that place, its ghost, its echo, and from that echo he withdrew a thread of deepest black.”
Finn Marlowe, A Thread of Deepest Black
This quote is obviously literary rather than educational, but it captures something many people describe when discussing intense sensation: the temporary narrowing or alteration of awareness that can occur during a scene.
Some people describe similar experiences using terms such as subspace, although there is no single universal experience that everyone has.
Among quotes about submission, descriptions like this can be compelling because they show how physical sensation and psychological surrender may become intertwined without suggesting that pain itself defines submission.
A much more intense example appears here:
“I’m offering you my pain. My blood. My pleasure. [Secondly], I’m offering you the right to whip and fuck. To debase and harm. [Lastly], I’m offering to fight your needs with my own. I’m willing to join you in the darkness and find pleasure in excruciating pain. I’m willing to be your monster, Q.”
Pepper Winters, Tears of Tess
The intensity is part of what makes the passage effective as fiction. In real BDSM relationships, however, language about giving someone a “right” to harm you should always be understood through the realities of consent and negotiated authority.
Erotic fiction can explore absolute surrender precisely because fantasy does not need to operate like an actual BDSM negotiation.
Quotes About Submission and Being Seen
One reason submission can feel so powerful is that it may allow someone to reveal desires or vulnerabilities they rarely express elsewhere.
“I look at him ready to cry again. Not out of pain. Not out of need. But because his words rub that part of my soul that suffers, that wants to be explored like a virgin land that has remained intact for centuries and craves to be occupied, appreciated and transformed.”
Aileen Rose, Girl in the Woods
This is one of the quotes about submission that emphasizes being understood rather than simply being controlled.
There can be an enormous difference between someone imposing an identity on you and someone recognizing a desire that you have chosen to reveal. Within a healthy D/s dynamic, submission should not require disappearing into another person’s expectations.
Ideally, the dynamic gives the people involved more room to communicate honestly about what they want from one another.
Quotes About Submission, Service, and Devotion
For some submissives, service is central to the dynamic. The satisfaction may come from completing tasks, anticipating a Dominant’s needs, following protocols, providing care, or knowing their actions have meaning within the relationship.
Service does not have to look particularly sexual from the outside. Cooking dinner, preparing clothing, completing an assigned task, maintaining a ritual, or helping manage something in a Dominant’s life can all carry significance depending on the dynamic.
This quote approaches that desire from the other side of the power exchange:
“I knew instantly that I wanted that type of love in my life. [Above all], to have someone I could take care of in every sense and who would trust me to do so. No matter what I asked of them.”
Breanna Hayse, The Game Plan
Quotes about submission often focus on what the submissive gives, but a healthy authority dynamic also involves what the person receiving that submission does with it.
Trust creates responsibility.
Being trusted with someone’s vulnerability, service, or negotiated obedience should never be interpreted as permission to stop considering their well-being.
Submission Does Not Mean Losing Your Autonomy
One thing that romantic quotes about submission sometimes obscure is that submission exists within consent. Research on BDSM consent has emphasized mutual, informed consent as a central feature distinguishing consensual BDSM from abuse, including the importance of negotiation, safety practices, and recognizing consent violations.
A submissive can give someone negotiated authority without surrendering their basic autonomy as a person. They can establish limits, revisit agreements, withdraw consent, stop a scene, or leave a relationship. That remains true even within highly structured authority dynamics.
The depth of someone’s submission does not determine whether their boundaries deserve respect. A person does not become more authentically submissive by tolerating behavior they never agreed to, and consensual authority should never be treated as unlimited access to another person’s body, emotions, or choices.
This is why I enjoy literary quotes about submission while still separating fantasy from education. Fiction can portray absolute surrender beautifully, but real BDSM relationships require communication, negotiation, and ongoing consent.
If you are new to these dynamics, my guide to what BDSM stands for explains some of the distinctions between Dominants, submissives, Tops, Bottoms, and different forms of power or authority exchange.
Submission Can Look Different With Different Partners
A submissive identity does not necessarily manifest identically in every relationship.
Someone might enjoy a highly structured service dynamic with one partner and primarily sexual submission with another. A person may enjoy submitting during scenes without wanting any ongoing authority transfer outside them.
Others identify deeply with submission regardless of whether they currently have a Dominant.
This flexibility is another reason I am cautious about quotes about submission that suggest there is one definitive submissive mindset. They can capture individual experiences beautifully without describing every submissive person.
Submission is a relationship to authority, sensation, service, surrender, or identity that people experience in many different ways.
You Can Be Strong and Still Choose Submission
The assumption that strength and submission are opposites misses much of what attracts people to D/s in the first place.
Someone can be assertive, professionally powerful, independent, and extremely clear about their boundaries while also finding tremendous pleasure in consensually surrendering authority.
In fact, knowing what you want and communicating it clearly can make submission more intentional.
The most meaningful quotes about submission often capture that tension. Vulnerability does not automatically erase strength, and strength does not require maintaining control at all times.
For some people, choosing when, where, how, and with whom they surrender is itself an expression of agency.
Exploring What Submission Means to You
If these quotes about submission resonate with you, consider what specifically you respond to.
Is it the idea of service? Trust? Pain? Psychological control? Being cared for? Following instructions? Having expectations placed on you? Temporarily giving up decision-making? Being witnessed in a vulnerable state?
You do not need to have an immediate answer.
Journaling can be particularly useful when you are exploring a submissive identity because it gives you space to separate what genuinely appeals to you from what you think submission is supposed to look like. My journal prompts for submissives can help you begin that process.
You may also discover that some of the quotes about submission you find most erotic describe experiences you only want in fantasy. That does not make the fantasy less valid.
Fantasy does not need to become reality to have value.
Quotes About Submission and Quotes About Dominance
Submission does not exist in isolation from the dynamics surrounding it. Many of the ideas explored here, including trust, responsibility, vulnerability, authority, and service, look different when considered from the Dominant perspective.
If you enjoyed these quotes about submission, you may also want to read my collection of quotes about Dominance in BDSM.
Reading both can be interesting even if you identify strongly with only one side of D/s. Understanding how people conceptualize both surrender and responsibility can provide a more complete picture of authority dynamics.
Final Thoughts on Quotes About Submission
The best quotes about submission do more than make submission sound erotic. They capture the contradictions that make it interesting: strength alongside vulnerability, agency alongside surrender, fear alongside trust, intensity alongside care, and service alongside self-knowledge.
There is no universal submissive experience. Some people find meaning through service, others through pain, restraint, protocols, psychological surrender, or being cared for by someone they trust. Some submit only in specific scenes, while others build relationships in which authority exchange influences substantial parts of their lives.
That diversity is part of what makes quotes about submission so interesting to collect. Each one offers a glimpse into someone’s interpretation of surrender without defining what submission must mean for everyone else.
